Gaming the Admission Process?

Sometimes the competitive nature of college admissions, with it's winners and losers, makes the whole thing seem like a big game. It's a confusing process, and one that easily can become overwhelming. There are many tools that can assist, but they're not much fun.

Well, I got an email from Kathryn, at a brand new company called Acceptly. It's an online tool that lets students track their progress as they apply to colleges. What's new, (I think pretty cool), is the whole thing is presented as a game. Interesting idea, especially for the students who may need a bit of a push. Another school year has come to an end. I can always tell, not just by the weather but by the ever increasing returned email saying, “XYZ High School is on Summer Break. See you in August and have a great summer!” We decided some time ago to take that advice. But before we sign off for that much needed break…

5 January 2011—Essex, Vermont. Just three months from now, hundreds of out-of-state parents will spend the weekend in Vermont. While C-P-A does not stand for Celebrity Paparazzi Antagonist, it does represent the winning entry for Jamie Nicholson and Caddo Mills High School in Caddo Mills, Texas. The high school student’s anti-definition of the acronym CPA beat out nearly 1000 other entries to score the top prize in the AICPA’s
StartHereGoPlaces.com website’s first ever competition – the Clearly Pretty Awesome Competition – meant to encourage high school students to investigate accounting careers through the website designed primarily for them. Ms. Nicholson won a laptop for her creativity and her entry was chosen to kick off the Start Here, Go Places. advertising campaign. Electronic Transcript Partnership Gives California High School Grads an Advantage While Saving Money, Time and Trees!

Sacramento, CA – May 19, 2010 – eTranscript California and CSIS Transcript Center have teamed up to expand the hugely successful college transcript service to include high school transcripts. The partnership, geared toward California students graduating high school, is known as the California Transcript Connection: highschool.etranscriptca.org

This partnership provides the foundation for creating a secure web-based method for digital transcript delivery. The program funded by a grant from the California Department of Education enables users to send transcripts to post-secondary institutions in California and across the country for a small fee. The service utilizes CSIS for data authentication and validation, and the National Transcript Center to translate student records into the recipients’ preferred data format and deliver using the recipients’ preferred method.

“This partnership provides a service that sets students up for the best possible opportunity of being accepted to their college of choice, especially now that UC and CSU campuses are capping enrollment,” says Tim Calhoon, Director of the California Community Colleges Technology Center, who has witnessed a streamlining of the delivery of student transcripts for students moving from community colleges to universities utilizing eTranscript California.

High school guidance counselors will:

- be able to send and track official transcripts in seconds with just a few short clicks

- no longer have to print, process or mail transcripts to colleges

- better service students by ensuring transcripts will not get lost, arrive at universities instantly and eliminate the potential for data entry errors

The success of the service relies on the willingness of high school districts throughout the state to embrace the electronic technology and get their high schools on board. “This is our biggest challenge,” says John DiPirro, a Director at CSIS, “because the process requires some effort on already burdened District IT departments. But when you consider what the schools will ultimately be saving in terms of time and money, we know it’s just a matter of time before high schools are lining up to participate.”

Currently California ranks 40th in the number of high school students who go directly on to college. “We’re optimistic that these numbers will improve as the college enrollment process becomes more streamlined and more data becomes available. Electronic transcripts are part of the solution,” emphasizes Calhoon. “Another advantage to the California Transcript Connection partnership, beyond cost savings to high schools, is the green factor. Not only is transcript paper expensive, but when you factor in the cost to the environment in terms of chemicals for processing, trees and fuel, it’s just common sense to move in this direction.”

Student Aid - 11,000 low-income students find their "dream" colleges really are affordable

A new, free program just showed nearly 11,000 low-income students nationwide that college is much more affordable than they thought by determining their aid eligibility before they actually apply to colleges.

Access for All™ provided the two things that recent academic research proves encourages more low-income students to apply to college: the combination of FREE professional assistance on their federal student aid application (FAFSA) and personalized information about how much aid to they can expect from the colleges of their choice.
For example, high school senior Maria H. of Pembroke Pines, FL, who is in the top 6% of her class and whose single parent earns $18,000, found that her net price to attend the U of Florida will be only $847 not the $16,936 sticker price.

StudentAid.com and USA Funds Tackle Most Difficult College Access Challenges

Sacramento, CA – April 13, 2010 – Two of the most difficult questions about college – How much student aid will I get? and What will college really cost me? – were answered for nearly 11,000 low-income students participating in the new national Access for All™ program.

The program provided a combination of services that researchers recently identified as key to increasing how many low-income students attend college – individualized assistance preparing the often-daunting federal student aid application (FAFSA) and insight into their aid eligibility.
Sponsored by StudentAid.com, the leading student aid advisory provider, and USA Funds, the nation’s largest student loan guarantor, the Access for All™ program offered each student free FAFSA preparation and a personal College Cost & Planning Report™, which calculated and compared their aid eligibility, net prices, and the out-of-pocket costs for six colleges of their choice from among 6,500. (Net price is a college’s price of attendance minus merit and need-based grant aid. Out-of-pocket cost is net price minus loans and work-study.)

All Access for AllTM participants came from households with an income of less than $40,000. Two- thirds will be the first in their family to go to college.

“This information gives my students motivation,” said Cat Ricketts, who teaches college planning to juniors participating in Lodi (California) High School’s AVID program. ”It gives them hope that one doesn't have to be middle-class to get into their dream college, provided they do the work that's necessary to prepare themselves to get there. They can shop for the college that best meets their individual and their family’s needs.”

Craig V. Carroll, StudentAid.com founder and chief executive officer, explained, “We must take innovative measures to show all students that college is affordable and how to access aid. Hundreds of thousands of eligible students leave money on the table by not applying for financial assistance.”

This approach was proven effective in a similar experiment by researchers from Harvard, Stanford, and the University of Toronto with tax consultant H&R Block assisting 24,000 students in 2008.

Professors Eric Bettinger, Bridget Terry Long, and Philip Oreopoulos called their results “unambiguously positive” because individuals, who simultaneously receive professional FAFSA preparation and personalized aid eligibility information, were substantially more likely to submit the aid application, enroll in college the following fall, and receive more financial aid.

The study by Bettinger, Long, and Oreopoulos was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the Institute of Education Sciences, the Kauffman Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education.

“The H&R Block FAFSA experiment is the best empirical evidence so far that pairing FAFSA assistance and personalized aid eligibility information encourages low and middle income students to apply for aid and go to college,” Carroll said.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has supported FAFSA guidance and college-cost transparency to encourage more students to go to college. As CEO of Chicago public schools, Duncan strongly encouraged that high school seniors receive FAFSA guidance to encourage college enrollment. Today, he oversees the move toward greater college-cost transparency by mandating all post-secondary institutions publish net price calculators on their Web sites by October 2011.

“Access for All™ participants were surprised about how much the net prices of their college choices can vary,” Carroll said. “In many cases, we were able to show students that college could be more affordable than their expectations, which were often based on ‘sticker prices’.”

University Visitor’s Network Announces MySchools Video Contest!

University Visitor’s Network (UVN) presents its first annual MySchools Video Contest for college students to submit videos that express positive and creative aspects about their college or university. Through original videos, students can convey what they love about any aspect of their school experience.

Be creative and tell the world how great your school is!

The student who submits the most creative video will receive a $5,000 scholarship paid directly toward his or her tuition.

Some examples of what videos may depict:

-Campus lifestyle -Sporting Events

-Community -Academics

-Dorm life -Arts

…The more creative the better!

The videos must be between 1 and 10 minutes and will be screened for appropriateness prior to being posted online. Nothing obscene or objectionable will be considered. Pine Manor can help prepare students for a successful college career even though English is not their first language?

This unique and supportive program is offered to eligible female ESL students who are motivated to achieve a four year college degree.

Pine Manor College (PMC) was once known as an elite private women’s college in Chestnut Hill, but in the past 10 years PMC has taken on a new image by providing quality education to a diverse and underserved population. Tuition was reduced by 34% and financial aid was increased. For 5 consecutive years, US News and World Report cites Pine Manor College as the most diverse, private women’s college in the country. The mission statement of the College “Pine Manor is dedicated to preparing women for lives of inclusive leadership and social responsibility…” reflects the huge commitment this college has to offering an affordable and personalized education to women.

A few years ago, the Enhanced First Year Program (EFY) was started as a building block for international students who lacked English proficiency but had strong academic potential to mainstream into a full academic college program. What makes this program unique is college credit is given for the two intensive English classes required in the freshman year so that even nonnative speakers have the opportunity to complete a full college program in four years. Many support vehicles are in place for students to succeed. ESL awareness training was offered to professors who would later serve as academic advisors. A student mentorship (big sister) program was initiated to help with new students’ adjustment. Moreover, individual and group tutoring is an integral part of each EFY student’s progress. Small classes, close monitoring and tutoring, allow EFY students to be successful. In fact, 75% of our students completed their freshman year with averages above 3.0 GPA.

Last year it was decided to expand the EFY program to include domestic ESL students for whom English is not their primary language. This expansion opened the door for many women to attend a private four year institution as an alternative to large community colleges or no college at all. Due to EFY’s success, we are promoting this opportunity to our ever-expanding ESL network. We believe Pine Manor’s commitment to a quality and affordable education, leadership mission, and specialized Enhanced First Year program will make it possible for these young women to earn a Bachelor’s degree.
